Tips For a Longer, Cleaner Burning Candle
Candles do more than just fill a room with fragrance—they set the mood, create warmth, and make any space feel cozy. But did you know that how you burn your candle can make a big difference in its performance? Whether you're a candle enthusiast or a casual burner, these tips will help you get the most out of every candle!
The first burn is important
When you light a new candle for the first time, let it burn until the wax melts evenly across the entire surface, reaching the edges of the container. This helps prevent tunneling, which occurs when wax burns straight down the middle, leaving wasted wax along the sides.
Trim your wick
A long wick can cause excessive soot. Before each burn, trim your wick to ⅛”-¼” to ensure a steady flame and cleaner burn. This is especially important for wood wicks, which should be trimmed to remove any charred wood from previous burns. If you don’t have a wick trimmer, you can wait until the wax is cooled and hardened and simply tip the candle over a garbage can and flick the burnt bits of wood off!
Keep your candle away from drafts
If your candle is placed near an open window, fan, or air vent, the flame may flicker and burn unevenly. Drafts can also cause excessive smoking and lead to a shorter candle lifespan.
Burn responsibly
Always burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable, and never leave a burning candle unattended. It’s also best to stop burning your candle once 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom to prevent overheating the glass.
Store candles properly
Candles should be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and dust. Heat can cause candles to warp or lose their fragrance, while dust can create an uneven burn. If you’re storing candles for a long time be sure to cover them with a lid!
A well maintained candle will reward you with hours of clean, even burning and a beautiful ambiance. Whether you’re lighting one to relax, set the mood, or add a touch of cozy to your space, following these simple tips will ensure you get the most out of your candle!!
